The nature of soccer requires that players be fit. That means that a player possesses a sufficient amount of the following characteristics:
- Agility: The ability to decelerate, change direction, and accelerate again
- Balance: The maintenance and/or control of a body position
- Coordination: The ability of various muscles to work together to produce a specific movement
- Endurance: The capacity to continue moving for a prolonged period of time
- Flexibility: The ability to move through a full range of motion.
- Power: The rate of performing work; the product of force and velocity
- Reaction: A response to stimulus
- Speed: The ability to achieve high velocity
- Strength: The maximal amount of force a muscle or muscle group can generate
